Shrewsbury Biscuits
125g (4 oz) butter or block margarine
150 g (5 oz) caster sugar
2 egg yolks
225 g (8 oz) plain flour
grated rind of 1 lemon or orange
Preparation Grease two large baking sheets.
Cream the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Add the egg yolks and beat well.
Stir in the flour and grated lemon rind and mix to a fairly firm dough with a round-bladed knife.
Turn out on to a lightly floured surface and knead lightly.
Roll out to about 5 mm (1/4 inch) thick. Cut into rounds with a 6 cm (2 1/2 inch) fluted cutter and place on the baking sheets.
Bake in the oven at 180掳C (350掳F) mark 4 for about 15 minutes, until firm and a very light brown colour.Simple biscuit recipes?

.INGREDIENTS
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon white sugar
1/3 cup shortening
1 cup milk

1.Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
2.In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Gradually stir in milk until dough pulls away from the side of the bowl.
3.Turn out onto a floured surface, and knead 15 to 20 times. Pat or roll dough out to 1 inch thick. Cut biscuits with a large cutter or juice glass dipped in flour. Repeat until all dough is used. Brush off the excess flour, and place biscuits onto an ungreased baking sheet.
4.Bake for 13 to 15 minutes in the preheated oven, or until edges begin to brown.
Baking Powder Biscuits
2 cups of all purpose flour
3 teaspoons of baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup of shortening
3/4 cup of milk
Heat oven to 450 degrees. Mix all ingredients until well blended/mixed. Roll dough out and cut into circles, place on baking sheet and bake until lightly brown. Approx 10-12 minutes. You can also just drop them onto the cookie sheet without rolling them if you like. This is called Drop Biscuits.

Just an FYI...a 'biscuit' to an American is vastly different then to a Brit. I see you are British so I am guessing you mean biscuit as in a cookie. Biscuits to Americans, especially us from the south (NC Georgia etc) is similar to a scone, just lighter fluffier and not as sweet. We like to put butter or country ham or sausage gravy over ours. Anyway...here is a simple but delicious biscuit/cookie recipe I love to make.
Traditional Oatmeal Cookies
1/2 cup (115 grams)butter
1/2 cup (60 grams)white sugar
1/2 cup (100 grams)brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup (95 grams)flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup (70 grams)rolled oats
Preheat oven to 350* (gas mark 4 177 C or mod to med heat oven) Cream together the butter and sugars. Blend in the egg and vanilla. Then stir in the dry ingredients until well blended. Roll into balls and place on greased cookie sheets. Bake for 12 minutes or until lightly golden brown.
My daughter sometimes likes to put bits of dried fruit (apples raisins etc) on top before I put them in the oven. They are simple and delicious.

PLAIN FLOUR BISCUITS
3 c. plain flour
1 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. soda
3 3/4 tsp. baking powder
3 tbsp. snowdrift
1 c. buttermilk
Sift flour, mix with other dry ingredients. Cut in snowdrift. Mix well with buttermilk. Roll out and cut biscuits. Bake at 400 degrees.
